Lt. John R. Casey Is Missing In Action In Southwest Pacific
A telegram stating Lieutenant John R. Casey, Jr., son of Postmaster and Mrs. J. Ransom Casey, is missing in action in the Southwest Pacific area, was received here today from the adjutant general's office of the war department by Lieutenant Casey's wife, who is living at 972 N. Eleanor street.
He has been missing since February 22. Last direct word received by Mrs. Casey from her husband was February 9.
It was but a few days ago that she received a letter from Lieutenant General George B. Kenney, in command of the organization in which her husband is fighting, stating that the Pomona officer had been awarded the air medal in recognition of courageous, fearless service to his combat organization. He was decorated for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights in the Southwest Pacific area from May 13 to October 19 last year.
Lieutenant Casey was one of the American fighter pilots who repaid the Japanese in good measure on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, last December 7, when the shot down 18 enemy planes and broke up a raid of Allied positions in New Guinea without loss to themselves.
He has been in service in Australia and New Guinea since going on active duty in November, 1941. Last summer, already a veteran of several engagements, he was promoted from second to first lieutenant.
He took primary and basic training army flight training at Cal-Aero school near Ontario and was graduated as an officer pilot from the Stockton air base.
One of the finest halfbacks ever to play on local football teams, he was named all junior college conference back in 1937. Previously he had starred at Pomona high school.
