Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Cash-Adams
01 Jun. 1820 – 12 Jun. 1928
Sallie Adams or "Granny Adams", as her descendents have dubbed her, was considered the oldest person in the state of Tennessee at the time of her death. (This is according to many descendents and an article in a local newspaper at the time of her death.) In her life, she reared seven children and a number of grandchildren, lived in four different counties, two different states and still enjoyed an incredible life span. According to her death certificate, she died from "old age" and had no physician when she died. Her death certificate number 17817 dated June 12, 1928 recorded her death as being in the 12th district of Smith County, Tennessee which is the community of Rome. Her place of burial was listed as Celina. The informant was D. F. Dulworth.
Sallie Cash was born in Burkesville, Kentucky in Cumberland County on June 1st, 1820. Her father was Thomas "Tom" Cash. She married Noah Adams circa 1838. In 1850, there is a written account of divorce between Noah and Sallie in Cumberland County, Kentucky. The divorce happened, although they have children born after the time of their divorce and it is most likely the couple remarried. They moved from Cumberland County, Kentucky to Overton County, Tennessee, but present day Clay County, which is approximately 23 miles away, around 1867. Noah passed in October of 1880, according to the United States Census Records Mortality Schedules.
Sallie reared seven children in her lifetime and witnessed all of them married and having children. This is a list of her children.
1. Sally Adams born ca. 1840 in Kentucky.
2. John Thomas "Quincy" Adams born April 7th, 1842 in Kentucky.
3. Richard Reuben "Dick" Adams born May 1848 in Kentucky.
4. Edward King "Ed" Adams born ca. 1850 in Kentucky.
5. Sarah Elizabeth Adams born ca. 1854 in Kentucky.
6. James A. Adams born December 1859 in Kentucky.
7. Joana Savanna Adams born ca. 1864 in Kentucky.
Sallie was living with her son, James Adams in 1920 at Willow Grove, Tennessee, a community that once existed in Clay County, Tennessee according to the 1920 Tennessee Census. She appears to have moved from her son's household prior to her son moving to Smith County, Tennessee as the newspaper article stated she moved a year before her death in 1928.

Volume XXXIV Number 4 The Upper Cumberland Researcher WINTER 2009
Sallie Adams passed away on June 12, 1928 at the home of her son James Adams. She lived a longer and perhaps a more simple life than anyone in today's time. She probably witnessed more things than most people do because of her longevity. She was born in to the James Monroe Presidency (Fourth President of the United States) and died in the Calvin Coolidge Presidency. She lived through 26 presidents, through 26 states being added, and four wars. (The Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish – American War, and World War I) She lived through some of the most devastating times that our country ever witnessed.
Her life was probably filled with the normal household duties of any mother during her life and the ordinary things that living brings to anyone. She was loved by her family as a mother and grandmother, and she may have been an aunt to her sibling's children. She cooked, cleaned, washed clothes, attended church, and helped with the sick in her family and in her community. These things we are sure Granny Adams did with love in her heart and because women did the things necessary for their family to live and prosper in society. Moving to different places gave her a wider view of other families and an understanding that families make decisions when needed even if it was uprooting a family and moving to another place for the benefit of ones own family as she moved with her son. Granny Adams certainly knew about death as most women of any age will encounter during a lifetime either witnessing the death of parents, siblings, children, neighbors and friends, and her living for 108 years would have taught her many lessons about death and dying. Surviving to be 108 years old is one thing which only a few people are blessed to do in life and the stories she may have told her family would be lessons in life as she experienced them. There is at least one photograph of "Granny Adams" and it is included with this story. When you view the lines in her face, think about how many hardships she witnessed and the good times as well and wonder about the traditions or customs she passed on to her family.
Mother's Friendship Day was established in 1868 and Mother's Day in 1915 was declared the second Sunday in May by President Woodrow Wilson as a way to honor all mothers and this story is our way to honor Mrs. Sarah "Sallie" Adams as her contribution to the world was to be a mother to her children and a grandmother to the next generation. Her life was important and valuable.
Kenzie Adams is a TN Tech student from Clay County, Tennessee and he told me about one of his ancestors. I told Kenzie this was a story appropriate for the people of the Upper Cumberland to know and we have written this story seeking more information about Sallie Adams.
