Gertrude Virginia Casto was born on July 5, 1904, to Dr. Jasper Clarence Casto, MD, and Hattie Belle (Carouthers) Casto of Wellsville, Kansas. Dr. Casto is listed in the Wellsville city directory of 1903 as one of the town’s four physicians.

Gertrude’s parents had moved to Wellsville from Putnam, West Virginia, at least ten years before her birth. They had married in Putnam in 1888, but soon afterward moved to Kansas. All of Gertrude's older siblings – sisters Evangeline (“Eva”) and Fannie, and her brothers Bernard and James Frederick – had been born in Kansas. It appears that only Gertrude and James survived to adulthood. James followed in his father’s footsteps and also became a physician.

In 1919, when Gertrude was 14 years old, her father, the elder Dr. Casto, died. Gertrude's mother, Hattie, died in 1939.

Gertrude married Charles Sloan Batdorf, local drug store proprietor, and lived with him in Wellsville until they moved to Pacific Grove, California in the late 1940’s. They bought a home at 1051 Egan Avenue and the two of them spent the remainder of their days creating a beautiful flower garden around their home. They had no children.

Her husband Charles died in 1976. Gertrude died in 1993.
