Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood, 19, of Byron, Ill., died Oct. 14 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He is survived by his parents, Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood of Byron; a sister, Mikaela (Lance Cpl. Matthew, USMC) Montgomery of North Carolina.; his fiancรฉe, Hailey Patrick of Davis Junction; his maternal grandparents, Donald and Mary Ernst of Varna; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The visitation will be from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Kishwaukee Community Evangelical Church, 8195 Kishwaukee Road, Stillman Valley. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Byron High School gym, 696 N. Colfax St., Byron. The Rev. Chris Brauns of Congregational Christian Church of Stillman Valley will officiate. Memorials may be directed to a scholarship fund set up at Byron Bank and Stillman Bank.
