Bertha Marie (Chapman) Blackburn, 96, of Canada, Ky. completed her life of service on July 7, 2015, at Signature Healthcare of Pikeville, Ky.
She was born May 27, 1919, at Roadfork, Ky, the daughter of the late Joseph and Betty (Collins) Chapman. She was married on May 18, 1937, and enjoyed 45 years with her husband, Floyd Blackburn. She was preceded in death by three (3) sisters, Juanita Harshburger, Gladys Rose, Mary Jane Sandifer, and four (4) brothers, William "Frankie", Hillard, Arnold and Clarence Chapman.
Survivors include, a daughter, Betsy (Clyde) James of Canada, Ky. Grandson, David Lell (Tia) James of Winchester, Ky, Floyd Michael (Belinda) James of Canada, Ky, granddaughter, Shelley Marie James of Canada, Ky, two great-grandsons, Jacob and Collin James and one great- grandaughter, Chloe Marie Kelley. One living sister, Sarah Neilson of Orville, Ohio, and one brother Joseph (Helen) Chapman of Canada, Ky. One special niece, Sheila (Ralph) Stepp, Chad and Stephanie, and Jason Chapman.
Bertha only went through the sixth grade; she had to leave school at a very young age to help with the chores around the house. She then met her late husband, Floyd Blackburn, and married in 1937. Soon after she married, her loving husband was drafted to WWII. While he was in active duty, she began her journey as "Rosie the Riveter." As a crane Operator, Bertha filled locomotive cars with battery water for Republic Steel. After three years of hard work and dedication, she came home to raise her beautiful daughter "Betsy". While being a loving mother and wife she started a 15-year career at Stronsinider Drug Store as a Fountain Manager. Bertha is proud to be a caring, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. When she wasn''t working, her favorite past time was gardening in her many flower beds. She was a member of The Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church where she faithfully served the Lord throughout her life for 45 years. Bertha will live forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
The Lord called Bertha to her heavenly home where she is now resting High on the Mountain.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015, at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Cemetery at Canada, Ky.
Family will receive friends beginning at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9 night and Friday, July 10 with special services at 7:00 p.m. both nights.
