Mary Belle Chapman was born in 1847 in Kentucky to William Carol Chapman Sr and Martha Ann Collins. She married Dr Samuel L Berry, 21 September 1868, in Ohio County, Kentucky. They had one son and moved to Florida in 1882. Mary Chapman Berry died of dysentery (then called flux), 19 May 1885, aged 38, in Altoona, Florida, and was buried at McCreery-Crow Cemetery, property that formerly belonged to her father, in Hartford, Kentucky.
