Mrs. Charlton was born June 17, 1915, in Brushy Run, WV. She was the daughter of the late James Lee Harper and the late Neva Dove Harper. She was the last member of her siblings. She lived in Harrisonburg, Virginia for almost 50 years.
In 2008, she moved to West Virginia, which she loved very much. Alpha worked at different shoe factories for six years. She was a member of the Peak Mennonite Church.
She married Charles Henry Charlton on March 20, 1933, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1963. Together they had 13 children.
Mrs. Charlton is survived by three sons, Aldon and wife, Mary Ellen, of Broadway, Va., Michael and wife, Beverly, of North Carolina, and Gary of Harrisonburg, Va.; three daughters, Neva Knight of McGaheysville, Va., Charlene Dean of New Orleans, and Rebecca Whitmer and husband, Gary, of Broadway; special daughter-in-law, Ruthaleen Charlton of Seneca Rocks, W.Va.; 45 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grand-children.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sons, Charles (Sonny) Charlton, David Lee Charlton, Robert Wayne Charlton and William Harold Charlton and three daughters, Phyllis Henton, Lettie (Susie) Deavers and Linda Charlton.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. The Rev. Elam Heatwole will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Rawley Springs Mennonite Church Cemetery.
