Funeral service will be Friday for Mrs. Augusta C. Barnwell

Augusta Claiborne Barnwell, 79, of Greenwood, died Wednesday Jan. 23, 1991, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Barnwell, known to her friends as Gusta, was born in Sunflower and lived for a number of years in Indianola. She and other members of her family have been well known for their cooking skills. Her brother, Craig Claiborne of New York, is a well known food writer and cookbook author. Her son, Edmond Claiborne Barnwell of Indianola, operates Claiborne Vineyards.

Mrs. Barnwell moved to Greenwood after her marriage to Robert Woodward Barnwell Jr., a cotton merchant. He preceded her in death.

Services will be held at noon Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. The Rev. Larry Maze will officiate.

Mrs. Barnwell was a charter member of the Greenwood Junior Auxiliary and served the community in many areas throughout the years. Although confined to a wheelchair in later years because of the surgical removal of a leg. Mrs. Barnwell remained an active person in the community. "Gusta probably covered more ground in that wheelchair than most of us could on two good legs." said her nephew, Jon Barnwell. Leflore County Chancery Court judge. A friend, Mary Dent Deaton of Greenwood, said Mrs. Barnwell was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her other friends agreed. Longtime friend Sara Kelsh said, "She had every reason in the world to complain." Mrs Kelsh said. "But she never did and people loved to help her."

Mrs. Barnwell was an active member of the Church of the Nativity. She served on the altar guild and the Episcopal Church Women. She helped with the youth at the church and was popular with little children.

Because of her cooking expertise she helped the church compile its first cookbook and served in the kitchen for many luncheons.

Survivors also include her daughter. Craig Barnwell Skates of Hattiesburg: another son, Robert W. Barnwell III of Saudi Arabia; and three grandchildren.
