Jean Alice Clapp St. Clair, 92, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, TN. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. St. Clair was born July 1, 1921, in Boston, MA, the daughter of K.N. and Alice Jean Clapp. Her family moved to Lubbock in 1923. She attended public schools in Lubbock, graduating from Lubbock High School in 1938. She attended Texas Tech University for two years. She completed her college work at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942. While at Iowa, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Upon graduation, she taught at Memphis High School in Memphis, Texas for one year.
In 1943, she moved back to Lubbock where she worked at the South Plains Army Air Field. She was in charge of maintaining the location logs of all gliders at the Glider School.
She married Ernest St. Clair on Jan. 15, 1944 and became an Army Air Corps pilot's wife. They were based, first, at Childress Army Air Field and then on to Ellington Field in Houston. From there they went to Westover Field in Chicopee Falls, MA to await orders to go overseas. When those orders came, she went back to Lubbock to work for the Adjudication Department of the Veterans Administration where she worked until her pilot returned home.
They moved to Amarillo in 1954. A lifelong Presbyterian, she became a member of First Presbyterian Church. She loved her church and her many friends there.
Mrs. St. Clair taught at Fannin Junior High School in Amarillo form 1962 through 1974.
In 1975, she joined a group of friends in the "Thursday Morning Bible Study". Her almost 40 year affiliation with them brought her joy beyond measure.
She was active in various civic endeavors over the years, including serving on the first Symphony Guild Board, the Family Service Board, Amarillo Junior League, and the Amarillo Junior League Garden Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia St. Clair and Shelley St. Clair, both of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Forman and husband, Joe, of Rockwall; and a great-granddaughter, Caroline Forman, also of Rockwall.
