Dorothy (Dot) Behrends, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2015. She was the third born child to Rose and Leo Clare on November 27, 1921. She grew up in Cortland where she attended school and went on to complete her college education at Peru State College. She attended St. James Catholic Church where she played the church organ for many years. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy. She loved spending time with her family and hosted many holiday gatherings, sometimes with up to 60 family members.
She will be most remembered for her many years of teaching at Norris School. After retiring, she continued her love for teaching by substitute teaching. She adored her students and even though lessons came first she will be remembered by many of her former students for sharing her jokes, magic tricks, card tricks and stories.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn (Lloyd) Otto; son, Gary (Sue) Behrends; son-in-law, Earl Nannen; daughter, Janet Biegert; son, Gerald (Judy) Behrends; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; many close cousins, nieces & nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Nancy Nannen; sister, Ruth (Wallace) Wunderlich; brother, Keith (Leola) Clare; son-in-law, Steve Biegert.
Mass of Christian Burial Friday, May 1, 2015 at St. Peters Catholic Church. Interment at St. James Cemetery in Cortland.
