Clarke, William Fayal: Editor. On editorial staff of the St. Nicholas since 1873, succeeded Frank R. Stockton as ass't editor, 1878; assoc. ed., 1893-1905; and editor-in-chief since the death of Mary Mapes Dodge, in 1905.
Born May 12, 1855, near Richmond, Va.; son of Dr. Dougan and Sarah J. (Bates) Clarke; parents moved to Indiana in 1856. Student at Earlham College, Richmond, Ind., until senior year. Member of the Barnard and Aldine clubs. Married May 28, 1862 at N.Y. City, Katherine Strickland, of Lakewood, Ont. Home address: 171 W. 71st St. Office: The Century Co., N. Y. City, U.S.A.
