Sara Ellen "Peggy" Backus, 84, of Parkersburg, passed away April 24, 2016, at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio

She was born in Parkersburg, the first child of the late Homer G. and Eva E. McClain Clark on March 18, 1932.

Peggy attended McKinley School and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1950. She became the unofficial chairman of the Reunion Committee for the many reunions the class had. She married her high school sweetheart. They met after school one day and were together from that day, on, 70 years. They were married for over 65 years. During her early years of marriage she worked at Parkersburg Blue Cross and General Mills in Minneapolis. In her later years she worked at O Ames and Kaiser Aluminum while raising her children and helping her husband complete his education. Most of her life was devoted to her main focus as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Peggy loved to read, quilt, make rugs, work puzzles and play games. She was an outstanding Bridge player. In 1965 she was awarded Life Master status by the American Contract Bridge League. She was the youngest person in this area to receive this honor. She has been an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years. She was a volunteer and long time supporter of The Actors Guild of Parkersburg.

Peggy was loving and much loved by her survivors, husband, Jim Backus; and sons, Jerry L. (JoAnn), Joseph E. (Carolyn), Jeffrey T. (Kim) and Jonathan M. (Angie) Backus; grandchildren, Jeremy (Terry) Backus, Cortney (Steve) Rotz, Emily (Pat) Milhoan, Jaime Backus, Nicholas Backus, Nancy Backus-Frady (Chris) and Britney Backus; 7 great grand-children; a stepgrandson; and several stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Jane Fansher; and brothers, R. Thomas (Jean) and Jack E (Judi) Clark.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Gerald H. and Billy E. Clark; one stepgrandson, Derek E. Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Fiona Q. Rotz.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Rev. Kert Busiek and Rev. William Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen North Cemetery.
