The death of Mrs. Florence Veronica (nee Cody) Abel of Humboldt occurred at her residence on Saturday, August 4, 2007. She was 82 years of age. Florence was born to John and Hilda (nee Wourms) Cody on August 24, 1924, at home on their farm in the Pilger district. She attained her education at Colorado School in Pilger, and at the Ursuline Academy in Bruno as a day student. A strong and independent person, following her graduation at the Academy, Florence moved to Regina and attended Teachers' College, where she received her permanent Class A Certificate. She began her teaching career at Crystal Springs, then taught at Merrywood School and Colorado School. On July 11, 1950, Florence married Joseph "Joe" Abel in St. Bernard's R.C. Church near Pilger. Their union was blessed with two children, a son and a daughter. For a short time, Florence taught at Lake Ignace School. In 1954, the family moved to the teacherage at Stuckel School near Lake Lenore, where Florence taught for the next ten years. In 1964, the Abels returned to Pilger, where Florence continued her career. Also during those years, Florence enjoyed curling, fishing, drama and, especially, watching her children participate in their various activities and sporting events. Attending auction sales, tending to her plants and flowers, "Sunday afternoon drives" any day of the week, going out to "the farm", and reading newspapers to keep up-to-date on current events filled many pleasant hours for her. Florence was also a devoted member of her church and of the C.W.L. Of great importance to her were her family, friends, colleagues, and a number of former students. Florence truly treasured them and the conversations they shared while visiting in person or keeping in touch by phone. She retired from teaching in 1979. Joe passed away in September 1987. Florence continued to reside in Pilger until moving to Humboldt in 2001. Florence will be lovingly remembered by her two children and two grandchildren: KEVIN Abel of Lake Lenore; and KAREN (Gerald) Smith of Fort McMurray, AB, and family, Sandra (Jeff) Goplin of Edmonton, AB; and Keith Smith of Edmonton, AB; one sister, Rose Mary Reynaud of Humboldt; three brothers: Ray (Mary) Cody of Saskatoon; Archie (Margaret) Cody of Pilger; and Wilf (Cece) Cody of Spruce Grove, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Abel; parents, John and Hilda (nee Wourms) Cody; brothers-in-law: Anton Ronellenfistch, Arthur Reynaud, John (Libby) Abel, and Michael Abel; and by sister-in-law, Frances (Laurenz) Zurburg. The Prayer Service for Florence was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at 8:00 p.m., led by Nestor Trach and organist Kathy Detillieux. Scripture readers were Jason Cody and Rosemarie Gallais. Special music was performed by flutist Camilla Malbeuf. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Thursday, August 9, 2007, at 10:30 a.m., concelebrated by Fr. Emile April and Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB. Others taking part were: Harold Zurburg, cross bearer; Daniel Malbeuf and Alina Hannotte, altar servers; Jeff Goplin and Lee Ann Hannotte, scripture readers; Kathy Malbeuf, intentions; Sandra Goplin and Keith Smith, gift bearers. An honor guard was formed by members of the C.W.L. and the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Florence's life." Active pallbearers were Terry Cody, Mark Cody, Gwen Clavelle, Richard Zurburg, Daryl Abel, and Jerry Ronellenfitsch. Interment followed at Holy Trinity R.C. Cemetery, Pilger. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society. SCHULER-LEFEBVRE, Humboldt, SK. (306-682-4114)
