Mrs. Cleveland, 76, Dies In New London

NEW LONDON—Mrs. Susan Everett (Colgate) Cleveland, 76, mother to U.S. Rep. James C. Cleveland, died unexpectedly at her heme Saturday [8 Jul 1967].

She was the wife to Dr. Mather Cleveland, retired head of orthopedics at St. Luke Hospital, New York City. They moved here in 1958 after summering since 1929.

She and Mr. Cleveland celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 20.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Colly Colgate. Her father was a New York stockbroker. Her grandfather, Anthony Colby, was a former governor of New Hampshire.

A native of New York City, she lived many years In Riverdale, N. Y. A graduate of Miss Porter's School, Farmington Conn., she received an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree In October, I960, from Colby Junior College, In recognition of her years of service.

Mrs. Cleveland was a member of the Colby Junior College board to trustees for 30 years and for the last 11 years was vice-chairman to the board.

With her sister, Mrs. John Sloane of Old Bennington, Vt., she helped restore Colgate Hall at the college, contributing the portico at foe rear of the building.

In the late 1950s she was largely responsible for the restoration of the original Colby Academy building.

She was a member of the New London Garden Club, the Women's Aid Society, and the New London Women's Club. She was an active member in the First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Cleveland leaves, besides her husband and her sister, three sons, Rep. Cleveland, Mather Cleveland Jr. of Brookline, Mass., and Newcomb Cleveland of Tulsa, Okla.; three daughters, Mrs. Russell Woeltz of Riverdale, N. Y. and Mrs. Mary Enelow and Mrs. Peter Hobbs, both of Los Angeles and 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church by Rev. John R. Schroeder, former pastor, now with the United Baptist Church of Lewiston, Maine, assisted by Rev. Jack W. Jensen, Interim pastor.

The family asked that flowers be omitted and contributions be made in her memory to the First Baptist Church, New London.
