Interment date: August 2, 1941.
California Death Index gives her birthdate as Sept. 9, 1856 in N.Y. Other references say Sept. 10.
Her body was returned to New York for burial and she was interred in the same cemetery as her ex-husband Starr Colgate, but in separate plots.

The lot where Adelaide Colgate is buried has only 4 stones: a vacant plinth, a stone that says "Our Dear Parents," one that says "Eunie," and a flat stone inscribed to Lewis and Elizabeth Angevine, which is mostly illegible.

Adelaide Phoebe Angevine was the daughter of Onderdonk Angevine and granddaughter of Lewis Angevine (1779-1830) who was born on the historic Angevine Farm in Scarsdale Manor, later home of James Fenimore Cooper. The estate was held by the Angevines under the Heathcoates and DeLanceys for 100 years. Her great-grandparents, John Angevine and Phebe Fowler, and great-great-grandparents Louis and Esther Sicard Angevine, all lived there, and probably her third-great-grandparents as well.

Adelaide Angevine and her parents were members of Broadway Tabernacle Church at the time of her marriage and at least through 1901 (The History of the Broadway Tabernacle Church, 1901). In 1930 she was living in Buffalo with her grandson Leroy Colgate.

Adelaide Angevine married June 27, 1877 in N.Y. (by Rev. Dr. Chambers) Melancthom Starr Colgate, son of Stephen Bowles Colgate and Susan Black Colgate; grandson of "Bowles Colgate, who, with (his brother) William Colgate, was the founder of the house of Colgate & Co."(ref., American Soap Journal and Manufacturing Chemist, Volumes 14-16 (1905), page 190.) (See also, The Colgate Story [1959] by Sheilds T. Hardin.)

M. Starr Colgate was born Aug. 25, 1856, New York City, and died February 24, 1923. In 1880, he and wife Adelaide were living with his parents on Halstead Street in East Orange, N.J., at the time of their daughter's birth. Starr Colgate and Adelaide Angevine divorced in 1895.

New York Herald Tribune, July 26, 1895, p.10: "Mr. Colgate...married Adelaide Phoebe Angevine, who belonged to a wealthy French family of East Orange, in 1877. They have a young married daughter and a son five years old. Their beautiful home in Bloomfield, N.J., has been the scene of many social entertainments."

The Colgate home was located in Glen Ridge, which became a separate town from Bloomfield in February 1895. The address was 237 Washington Street, Glen Ridge (1895-May 1896 City Directory). The home located at this address today is described as "Charming 1889 vintage Queen Anne Victorian" though another website says it was built in 1908. The address may have changed or the original Colgate home may have been destroyed between 1885-89 if the house currently on the site was erected in 1908, though likely it is the original structure.

The St. Louis REPUBLIC, July 26, 1895, p. 9: "Mrs. Colgate, before her marriage, was Adelaide Phoebe Angevine, the daughter of a wealthy French family in East Orange, N.J. She was and is still a beautiful and charming woman and her home in Bloomfield, N.J., has been the scene of many social gatherings of note. She was married in 1877, and is now 38 years old. Her eldest child, a daughter, 17 years of age, was married recently, and the wedding caused considerable comment on account of the youth of both parties."

NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, July 27, 1895, p.4: "Mr. Colgate was of the banking firm of Nesslage, Colgate & Co. His family have lived in a beautiful mansion in Bloomfield, Essex County, since 1880, and are therefore residents of this State. Mrs. Colgate swears that they were married June 27, 1877, and after three years left New York, taking up their residence in New Jersey. For twelve years the couple lived happily in their country home. Then Mr. Colgate began staying from home over night a great deal, and she learned of his relations with the Bassett woman...."

The Colgate divorce created quite a bit of scandal.

SAN FRANCISCO CALL, July 27, 1895, p.1: "Before her marriage Mrs. Colgate was Adelaide Phoebe Angevaine (sic), the daughter of a wealthy French family in East Orange. She was and is still a beautiful and charming woman, and her home at 237 Washington avenue, Bloomfield, has been the scene of much social enjoyment. She was married in 1877, and is not 38 years old. Her eldest child, a daughter not yet 17 years old, was married recently, and the wedding caused considerable comment on account of the youth of both parties. The other child is a boy of 5."

Starr Colgate and Adelaide Angevine had two children:

(1) Louise' Angevine Colgate, b. Mar. 28, 1880, m. 27 JUN 1895 at Hoboken, Hudson Co, N.J., Louis Lefferts Pendrell, b.1873 Mass.(N.J.?) (d.16 Dec 1912 New Rochelle, NY), son of George & Maria L. Pendrell (Maria m.2 Frederick W. Kalbfleisch) of Glen Ridge, N.J.; lived six doors away from the Colgates. The elopement was the subject of news in the Jersey Journal, July 18, p.2 column 5, and July 29, 1895, p.1 column 4; NY TIMES, July 27, 1895; NY HERALD, July 27, 1895, p.5; NY HERALD TRIBUNE, July 30, 1895 p.8, July 31, p.7. She was fifteen years old.

Ruth Pendrell who married Richard Kessler was the granddaughter of Starr Colgate, second cousin of Samuel James Colgate whose widow Cora Smith Colgate married in 1898 the Earl of Strafford. Cora was the daughter of Samuel Smith of New Orleans and a sister of Ada Smith Kessler of New York.
