Enlisted, 1890, in Troop A Cavalry ( Squadron A ), New York City. He served in Troop A with his brother Austen Colgate and his cousin William Colgate Colby. Both were founding member of Squadron A ( April 2, 1889 ). He was discharged from Troop A Cavalry in 1891.

His nephew Robert B. Colgate served in Squadron A in 1927.

World War 1, chairman of the War Service Commission of the soap industry.
