She was the fifth of seven children. She grew up on a farm west of Providence in Johnson County. She attended junior high and high school in Plainfield. She won the Best Seamstress Award as a Junior in 1948 and graduated in 1949. After graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Child Guidance Clinic of Riley Hospital until July 1951. She married William Robert Allred of Mooresville on June 15, 1950. Along with her husband, a United Methodist Minister, she lived in Mooresville, Nashville, Cloverdale, Cory, Bloomington, Paoli, Beech Grove, Washington, and Franklin.
She received bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Indiana University. She taught elementary school for two years in Salem and for 19 years in the Indianapolis Public School System at schools 43, 114, 60, 70, and 34. She retired in 1992. A talented and versatile person, she loved to travel and visited all 50 states and 36 countries. Margaret was a fine Christian woman and a life long Methodist active in Sunday School, youth work, and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Franklin and a member of the Johnson County Retired Teacher's Association. She had been in the Special Care Units of the Franklin United Methodist Community since January 2002.
She is survived by her husband, twin daughters, Ann Jones of Evansville and Amy Uhl of Corydon, two sons, Alan of Indianapolis, Indiana and Aaron of Charleston, West Virginia, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, brother Wilmer of Pittsboro and sister Ruth of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Arlene Kay Allred.
Services arranged by Carlisle & Son Funeral Chapel, Mooresville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, November 18, 2006 in the Wright Memorial Chapel, Franklin United Methodist Community, 1070 West Jefferson Street, Franklin, Indiana where friends may call from 3:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, November 17, 2006 and one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Mooresville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin United Methodist Community.
