Burton Atkins Collins was the son of Romie and Emma Adkins Collins. During high school and college, he was a football star athlete. He pitched for the Baltimore Black Sox in 1932. He received his teaching certificate and found a position in the Birmingham Public School System.

On 12 September 1931, Burton married Lola Townsend in Chilton County, Alabama. Lola was also a public school teacher. They had one daughter, and Lola died soon after giving birth.

Burton married Sadie Spears on 15 August 1939. They had one son together.

Burton suffered from mental illness and was hospitalized in Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama in 1946. He passed away there a year later.
