Bimat, Pauline Evelyn "Aunt Polly"

Pauline Evelyn Bimat "Aunt Polly" July 27, 1906 - September 28, 2007 Pauline Evelyn Bimat was born in Buffalo, West Virginia on July 27, 1906 to Minnie McCoy Collins and Charles Edward Collins. Six siblings, Ruby, Nellie, Lima, William, Una and Paul, and her husband, Leon J. Bimat, preceded her in death. While a history of Pauline's "early years", that is, up until she retired at age sixty-five from the City of Bakersfield Treasurer's Office, would undoubtedly reveal her lively character, more recent memories indelibly recall her presence and lifelong habits. Feisty as they come, she "retired" only from her job. For another thirty-six years, Aunt Polly faithfully played an unforgettable role in the life stories of four generations--as a loving wife, sister, aunt and friend. We just called her Polly, as that's how we knew her best. In words and deeds Aunt Polly cherished her family. Thoughtful gifts for all occasions flowed generously to young and old alike. Cheerfully browsing shopping aisles, Polly made sure our households shared her favorite finds. A big fan of birthdays and seasonal holidays, she peerlessly shipped Dewar's Chews--along with her greetings to far flung relations--for what is probably a record-breaking sixty years and then some. Polly loved to eat out and "bested the best" in any bout for the tab. In recent years she especially loved Lorene's Ranch House and the friendly servers who made her daily meals so pleasant, as well as Dewar's ice cream and of course, Mexicali's No. 15. Late into her nineties Polly still tended beautiful roses and violets and stubbornly guarded a renowned trash-and-treasures collection. Her cats, too, were "worshipped" affectionately. She leaves behind a loyal Honey, last in a legendary line. Over the decades without lapses, Polly staunchly connected with our lives and hearts by telephone regardless of distance. Fond notes and remembrances at special times were sent without exception year after year. From joyful announcements of family births to condolences at times of loss, throughout our lives Polly was steadfastly there for us. She showed up. She listened. She did her best to help. Even at 101 years, Polly invariably voiced gratitude for her daily blessings and always said "thank you" for the smallest gestures of kindness made on her behalf. Polly is survived by her loving nieces and nephews--Wayne and Dodie Dye; Carole Anne Elzey; Robert and JoEllen Minner; Barbara Orr; Midge and Chuck Shields; Jan Thornton; Larry and Marlyn Thornton; and Shelley Thornton--as well as many great and great great nieces, nephews and friends whose lives she blessed. Her spunk and smile will be missed by all. Our special thanks to Dr. Robert Laughlin for his many years of care and immeasurable kindness; to Evelyn Navarette (and Julio); and to Janet, Antonia, Maria, Araceli, Linda and A Caring Touch. Our appreciation as well to Optimal Hospice and the cheerful people who blessed Polly with their professional services, making her last year at home possible. We are grateful to all who filled Polly's days with warm smiles and laughter, as she herself had done for so many for so long. Memorial donations in Polly's memory may be made to the S.P.C.A. or to Optimal Hospice. Visitation is scheduled on Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, October 4, 2007, at Union Cemetery. Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara
