Chico Enterprise, Saturday, May 16, 1914: "Paradise Man Dies In Local Hospital. A.T. Coon, well known resident of Paradise, died this afternoon at the Enloe Hospital following an illness caused by disorders of the kidneys. The deceased was a native of Illinois, aged 71 years. He is survived by a widow alone. Arrangements for the funeral had not been made up to a late hour."

Coon, one of the most respected pioneers of Butte county, who held friendships covering Northern California, passed away at a local hospital yesterday afternoon following an attack of kidney trouble. He was seventy-one years old. He came to the hospital recently from his home in Paradise, but his age and the acuteness of the disease made death expected. Coon crossed the plains to California with his father, the late William Coon, and mother and four other children in 1860. Upon the arrival here the family settled near Durham, seven miles south of Chico, on what was supposed to be government land, occupying 154 acres. Later seventy-four acres was added to the ranch. Eight years later the land the Coons settled on was claimed as a grant but later was proved government land and the Coons retained it. When A.T. Coon married he settled on land near his father's. He later moved to Paradise, where he had made his home since. Coon is survived by his widow; a brother, Emmett Coon of Durham; two sisters, Mrs. F.F. Duffield of Corning, and Mrs. P.C. Richardson, living near Durham."

Slaughter of this city officiating. Interment will be made in the Dayton cemetery. The pallbearers were: F.W. Thompson, H. Vermett, F.V. Fimple, William Taylor, T.H. Mitchell and H. Morgue. Coon is survived by his widow, a brother, Emmett Coon of Durham; two sister [sic], Mrs. F.F. Duffield of Corning and Mrs. P.C. Richardson, living near Durham."
