CHELMSFORD -- Loretta F. (Cooney) Allen, 83, of Chelmsford, a former longtime resident of Lowell's Belvidere section who was a School Department typist at City Hall, died Friday, March 2, at Town and Country Nursing Home in Lowell. She was the wife of Richard Allen.

She was born in Lowell on March 25, 1918, a daughter of the late Thomas and Loretta (Carroll) Cooney. She attended St. Peter's School, and graduated from Lowell High School.

Mrs. Allen was a communicant of The Immaculate Conception Church in Lowell and a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She was employed as a typist for the administration of the Lowell School Department in City Hall and later on Appleton Street for 20 years until her retirement.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ted L. and Kathleen Allen of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, Laurie M. Allen of Chelmsford; three grandchildren, David Allen of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Caroline Allen of Burlington, Vt., and Brendan M. Allen of Chelmsford; a sister, Dorothy McGuirk of Lowell; and a brother and sister-in-law, John and Virginia Cooney of Chelmsford; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was also the sister of the late Mildred McMahon, Marion Kelley, Virginia Garland, and Thomas Cooney.
