Gage Rodman "Rod" Cooney, 60, 2929 Burke, a member of the State Highway Commission and head of Butte's historic Cooney Food Brokerage, died Thursday in a local hospital. The son of former Gov. Frank Cooney, who headed the state from 1933-35, Mr. Cooney was born March 23, 1916, in Missoula. He attended Missoula schools, including the University of Montana. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then came to Butte and joined the Cooney firm, on of the oldest food brokerages in the Northwest founded in 1894. Mr. Cooney served as vice president of the company, then became president and general manager about six years ago. He was appointed to the State Highway Commission as Southwestern Montana representative by Gov. Forrest Anderson in 1969. He was reappointed by Gov. Tarn Judge in 1973. That term would have been completed next year. Mr. Cooney was elected president of the Butte Executives Club in May. He was an active Democrat and a prominent member of the American Legion, for which he recently served as district commander. He was also a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and Floral Park Community Club. His son, Mike of Butte, is unopposed Democratic nominee for the House Dist. 83 seat. Mr. Cooney and his wife, Ruth, were married in Washington, D. C. Besides his wife and son, survivors include son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Terry (Linda) Whindom; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Cooney; grandchildren, Michael Whindom and Brodie Cooney, all of Butte; brothers, John of California, Walter "Packey" of Butte and Tyler of Lolo, and sisters, Merlie Hughes of Butte and Virginia Dunfee of Albuquerque. Mr. Cooney was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Emma, and a brother, Francis.

Survivors in addition to those listed Friday include his mother-in-law, Verna Brodie of Butte, and sister, Virginia Dunphy of Albuquerque. Mr. Cooney was active in the March of Dimes and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, National Food Brokers and Butte Country Club. His grandparents, the Poindexters, were one of the first pioneer families in Montana.
