She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Copley, who came to America from Nottinghamshire, England when she was about 13 years old. On 1 Jan 1867 she married Gottlieb Bettschen in Berlin, Ontario and they lived on the old Bettschen homestead from 1869 to 1907 when they moved to New Dundee. They had one daughter, but also adopted Anna, who married Nathaniel Clemens, and Ellen, who married Henry Bauer.
