E.J. CORBETT FUNERAL HELD

Ex-Clerk Fatally Injured In Fall

Funeral services for Elijah Corbett, Sr., 57, for many years prominent in McMinnville social and political affairs, were held from Macy & Son chapel here Sunday afternoon. He was killed instantly last Thursday evening when he fell from a bedroom window on the second floor of his home.

In the presence of a large number of relatives and friends, services were conducted by the Elks' lodge, of which he had been trustee. Burial was made in Evergreen Memorial cemetery with Union lodge, A.F. & A.M., in charge.

Mr. Corbett's lifeless body was found about 8:20 o'clock Thursday evening on the driveway at his home. He had been painting the underside of the bedroom window and evidently lost his balance, falling head first, to the concrete drive below. His skull was crushed. A coroner's inquiry, conducted by Deputy Coroner Don Cauthorn, held death as accidental.

On the front of his sweater jack was a smear of paint, smudged there as he slid through the window. On the window casing was a daub of paint, believed smeared as he frantically grabbed to keep from falling while under his finger nails were bits of paint and wood, evidently clutched as he lurched out the window.

The body was found by his son, who had conversed with his father only a few minutes before.

Born in Portland March 29, 1876, Mr. Corbett was the son of William and Ella T. Phailing Corbett. He was a graduate of old Portland high school. Before coming to Yamhill county he served for 17 years as a clerk for Blumauor-Frank Drug company, and ten years with the Willamette Iron & Steel works.

In 1913, he brought his family to a farm east of McMinnville where they resided until about eight years ago when they moved here. He became county clerk in 1922, resigning in 1928 to become secretary of the American Savings & Loan association.

Besides having been a member of the Masonic and Elks' lodges, he also had been affiliated with Eastern Star and with Multnomah Athletic club, Portland. He also was a member of the Episcopal church, and had been a member of company H, Oregon national guard, Portland.

Besides his widow, whom he married Nov. 6, 1899, he is survived by one son, Elijah, Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Ellen Woodry of Salem, and a sister, Mrs. Cleo Payne of Long Beach, Wash.
