83, died on June 6, 2007 at her home in Palo Alto, CA. An accidental fire led to her succumbing from smoke inhalation. It had been only a year, since her 4 1/2 year recovery from inoperable lung cancer in both lungs under the care of Dr. George Waltuch, of the Menlo Clinic.
Barbara was born in Boone, IA. on September 5, 1924. In 1936 she won the Goeppinger Award for Top Scholastic Accomplishment among her peers in Boone. She graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA., in 1946 with a major in biological science. Barbara was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority - a lifelong commitment.
Barbara retired after working 32 years for the Palo Alto Unified School District, including Palo Alto High School and Jordan.
Every Sunday she attended St. Athanasius Church, Mountain View, CA. She was a founding member of Alpine Hills Tennis and Swimming Club, Portola Valley, CA. She was also a member of Peninsula Volunteers' "Little House", Menlo Park, CA.
She is survived by her husband Ted Costello; son Gordon Costello of Canoga Park, CA; and Granddaughter Rebecca Costello of Sacramento, CA.
Interment will be Friday June 15, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Del Rey, Los Altos, CA. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller Hapgood & Tinney, Palo Alto, CA.
