Couzins, a native of Brighton, England, was a volunteer nursing escort & relief worker during the Civil War. Along with her husband, she headed the relief corps in the St. Louis cholera epidemic of 1849. When the war broke out, Couzins volunteered her services to one of St. Louis' leading surgeons at the New house of Refuge Hospital. Couzins contributed her services to the Union cause as a member of the Ladies' Union Aid Society of St. Louis. She was not paid for her services & even paid her own way to the battlefields. She founded the Female Guardian Home of St. Louis & headed the Ladies' Sanitary Corps of the Special Health Department after the war & campaigned actively for woman suffrage.
