Honored Resident of Fairfield Buried Monday in Choteau

Mrs. William J. Crittenden of Fairfield, wife of former county commissioner of Teton county and an honored resident of the Fairfield community since 1912, who died in the family home last Saturday after a long illness from diabetes, was buried in Choteau cemetery Monday afternoon, August 13.

Mrs. Crittenden had been in poor health for a number of years, had become almost blind and for three months before her death had not been able to leave her bed. Suffering intensely at times, she was cheerful and patient through it all, until death brought relief on her 64th birthday.

Mary A. Starmer was born in Chicago on August 11, 1859. In 1884 she was married in Nebraska to W.J. Crittenden and in 1891 the family moved to Montana, settling in the Gallatin valley, near Bozeman, where they remained until 1912 when Mr. Crittenden homesteaded on the edge of what is now the townsite of Fairfield.

The family has been prominent in the life of Fairfield and the community and Mrs. Crittenden was widely known and loved for her generous, sympathetic nature. She was an earnest Christian and was active in church affairs as long as her health permitted. Her life was an influence for good and her patience in trial was an example of real fortitude. That she held a warm place in the hearts of neighbors and friends was apparent by the numbers who paid final respects at the funeral and by the beautiful and abundant floral tributes.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Crittenden is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W.W. Cole of Fairfield, Mrs. Earl Zimmerman of Bole, and Miss Helen Crittenden of Fairfield; three sons, W.B., Albert and Dean, all of Fairfield. One son, Joseph, died five years ago.

Funeral services were held in the church at Fairfield Monday afternoon. Brief services were conducted at the grave in Choteau cemetery.
