Addie Croxton Abernathy, 92, died in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, August 4, 2012,
She was born on January 23, 1920 in Lodge, Virginia. Addie was raised on a family farm in the historic "Northern Neck" of Virginia, which was the birthplace of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. It was on that farm that her parents, George William and Violet Rose Croxton, raised their six children, of which Addie was the oldest.
Addie and William J. (Bill) Abernathy were married on August 25, 1945. After World War II ended, they moved to Bill's ancestral home of Pulaski, Tennessee, where he learned the machinist trade and their only child, Bill Jr. was born. The family moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1951 (population 17,000) when her husband began working for the Army Missile Command (and later NASA).
Addie was very active in Huntsville for the next 51 years. She was a charter member of Whitesburg Baptist Church, where she was church historian, was active in the Women's Missionary Union and taught teenage girls in Sunday School. She also enjoyed playing tennis, discussing politics and working at the Madison County Court House. In the 1950s and '60s Addie was active in bringing a two-party system to the South. She served on the Madison County Republican Executive Committee and was president of Rocket City Republican Women's Club. In 2002 she moved to Atlanta to be near her son and his family.
She is survived by one son, William J. Abernathy, Jr., his wife Shirley and granddaughter Laura, all of Dunwoody, Georgia. She has three surviving sisters: Waverly Burruss of Ruther Glen, VA; Helen Brann of Village, VA; and Eleanor Dawson of Warsaw, VA. Her two brothers, Warren Croxton and George Croxton, preceded her in death earlier this year.
Evening visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, Alabama, in the Chapel (The Rock) on Wednesday, August 8. Visitation in the Chapel will start at 10:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM. Addie will be interned at Valhalla Memory Garden, next to her husband Bill, who died in 1981.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Addie's Memory to the Missions Fund at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, Alabama, or the American Cancer Society, or another Cancer Research Organization.
