Margaret Ann ("Maggie") Coots was born in Illinois, on January 11, 1848 [Note: there is conflicting information for Maggie Coots' birth year. Her death certificate shows her birth date as January 11, 1850 and her gravestone just shows 1852; however, family bible records show January 11, 1848, and she is shown with her parents in the 1850 census as being two years old.] Margaret was the only daughter and youngest of three known children from the marriage of Thomas B. Cullom and Martha Mariah Akers. In the 1850 census, living in Tazewell County, Illinois, Margaret is shown in the household of William F. and Margaret Tucker; her parents, Thomas B. and Martha Cullom; and her two brothers, William Jesse and James H. (Note: William F. and Margaret Tucker are believed to have been "Uncle Will and Aunt Mag Tucker" mentioned in many family letters that survive.)

Margaret's father, Thomas B. Cullom, died in the early 1850's and her mother Martha Mariah married Samuel Malone in late 1855. This created a large blended family. Her step-father, Samuel Malone had several children from his two previous marriages. Margaret also became a new big sister to a half-sister, Henrietta Viola Malone, born 1856. This blended family was living in Rooks Creek township in Livingston County, Illinois in the 1860 census. By the 1870 census, Margaret had moved with many members of this blended family to Vernon County, Missouri and she had married K.L. Strosnider a few years earlier. This Strosnider family was living a few households away from Margaret's mother and step-father in Virgil township; however, the census record incorrectly shows the surname as "Snyder". The marriage was a short one as Margaret's husband died in January 1871. K.L. and Margaret Strosnider had two known children:
1) Jesse Edward Strosnider, b. December 1868
2) Charles Lemuel ("Lem") Strosnider, b. May 1871

Margaret next married David W. Coots and in the 1880 census (living in Cedar County, Missouri), in addition to the two Strosnider children from Margaret's first marriage, David and Margaret had two children of their own, Floy and Guy Elbert. David and Margaret Coots were still living in Missouri by the 1900 census (Barton County) and had added another son, Clyde J., to the household. The three known children from the marriage of David W. and Margaret Coots were:
1) Floy Coots, b. September 1878
2) Guy Elbert Coots, b. June 1880 (shown as "baby" in the census)
3) Clyde J. Coots, b. March 1885.

David and Margaret Coots moved to Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas around 1907 and remained there until Margaret died on November 21, 1932. Her death certiciate (19-8722) appears to indicate she died of double pneumonia. Information was supplied for her death certificate by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Clyde Coots. John A. Friske was shown as the undertaker and burial shown as Nashville, Missouri on November 23, 1932.
