ACKERMAN (Cumming), Anne - Died in Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Wednesday, November 13, 2002. Born February 23, 1920, in Brora, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Margaret Cumming. The family immigrated to the United States in 1921, eventually settling in the Boston area. Mrs. Ackerman received her registered nursing certificate from Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in 1941. Her career in health care spanned over four decades. She had extensive experience in hospital nursing before she developed a specialization in occupational health. She was employed as an industrial nurse for several corporations before assuming a position as an industrial health consultant for Kemper Insurance Corporation. She later worked as an occupational health compliance officer for the State of Massachusetts. In 1941, she was married to Clement McDermott of Alston, Mass. She bore four sons, James F., Manchester, N.H.; Thomas D., Yountville, Calif.; Paul A. and Peter J., both of Woburn, Mass., over the course of their 17 year marriage. She was predeceased by Mr. McDermott in 1957, in addition to her four sons, she leaves seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. After 12 years of working hard to both raise and support her sons, Mrs. McDermott married Mr. Philip Ackerman of Georgetown, Mass., in 1969. Together they founded Occupational Safety and Health Associates providing health related services to small and medium sized businesses throughout the New England area. Vacationing with her husband, Mrs. Ackerman felt as if she had returned to her Scottish roots when the two visited the Yarmouth area. The couple purchased a home in Kelley's Cove and officially immigrated to Canada in 1985. After Mr. Ackerman's death in 1993, Mrs. Ackerman spent many happy hours watching the sea from the comfort of her living room. She was blessed with wonderful friends and neighbors, who watched over her with tenderness and care. Into death she was a determined and fiercely independent woman who deeply loved her family and friends. Mrs. Ackerman elected to be cremated and buried by the side of her husband, Philip. Friends are invited to offer prayers in silent meditation in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Monday, November 18. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. in Chebogue Cemetery, Pastor Chad Nickerson officiating.
