She was born September 14, 1951 in Butte, Montana, to Mary Elizabeth O'Mailia O'Brien and Thomas Daniel O'Brien, and later moved with her parents to Cañon City, Colorado.
She graduated from St. Scholastica Academy High School and enrolled at The University of Northern Colorado where she completed her Bachelors degree in Nursing. Mary later when on to study at The University of Utah and received her Masters Degree in Nursing.
Mary was devoted to her profession having worked over forty years as a nurses' aide, nurse, and nursing educator; most notably for The Holy Cross Hospitals and later at the University of Utah's College of Nursing.
Throughout her life, she was active in politics and was a lifelong Democrat. She loved volunteering in the community and loved all animals. Mary was especially devoted to her horse Scarlet which she cared and loved for. She enjoyed competing in Dressage and other riding events.
She was an avid reader, and enjoyed music, her favorites being the works of Simon and Garfunkel and Bob Dylan. She also loved skiing and ice skating. Mary was an active member of St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Parish in West Jordan.
She is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her three sons, Patrick, Joseph, and Brendan, as well as numerous friends and family.
A vigil will be held at St. Joseph The Worker, 7405 South Redwood Road (1700 West), West Jordan, on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in which friends and family are invited to attend beginning at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held the following morning, Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.
She will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, in her beloved Butte, Montana.
