Coming to America with very little education, Daniel settled near Butte, Montana where he worked in the mines for a time. He moved on to California and worked developing land and managing interests for people of wealth. For a long time he managed the Warner Ranch which ran from Los Angeles to San Diego as well as working for Governor Downey of California. In later years he founded orphan asylums and hospitals and always donated to charitable organizations. He married Margaret McElroy in the 1880's and they had six children. The family residence was located at 2045 West Washington Blvd in Los Angeles.
