Martha C. Baer, 92, of Ashland, formerly of Orrville, died Saturday morning, Dec. 4, 2010, at Brethren Care Village, Ashland, following a period of declining health.

She was born April 25, 1918, the daughter of Clarence O. and Lura C. (Childs) Cunningham in Bainbridge in Geauga County. Mrs. Baer grew up in Chagrin Falls, graduating with the class of 1936. She was a graduate of the class of 1940 from Ohio Wesleyan University.

She and William B. Baer were married June 27, 1942, in Chagrin Falls. Mr. Baer died Oct. 6, 1984. They had two children, Marcia Baer of Ontario and James (Gloria) Baer of Mentor; and a grandson, Zachary Baer of Mentor.

Mrs. Baer taught in the commercial department of Orrville High School for 25 years, retiring in 1974. She was active in the student council for 18 years at the local, county, state and national levels.

She was formerly a member of the Greater Wayne County Foundation, past matron of Orrville Chapter 208 of Order of the Eastern Star, secretary of Wayne County hospice board, Orrville Area United Way board, Orrville City Schools Foundation, served on the former Savings Bank and Trust Co. advisory board, Wayne County Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was a past president of Orrville Nomad Club, Orrville Book Club, Research Club and AAUW, and was a charter member of AAUW and the Sew-Journ Club.

In 2002, she moved to Belmont Tower, a part of the retirement facilities of Brethren Care of Ashland.

Besides enjoying family, friends and teaching, she loved to travel, play bridge and read, and especially enjoyed her summers at the Pleasant Hill cottage.

Mrs. Baer is survived by her daughter and son, grandson, five nieces and a nephew, several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and a great-great nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Baer; sisters, May and Grace Cunningham; and a nephew.

A service will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Auble Funeral Home in Orrville. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Orrville.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, where an Eastern Star service will be conducted prior to the funeral.
