Sarah Armstrongs maiden name is given as Cunningham on her youngest daughter Mary Armstrong Neely's gravecard. Sarah Cunningham Armstrong was born in Ireland about 1794 (US Census, 1850). She married William Armstrong in Ireland before 1822 when their first child was born.

In about 1836 based on Ann Armstrong Smiths Obituary (Note: Henry Armstrong Census 1900, 1910, 1920 give immigration years as 1834, 1837, 1832, respectively) the Armstrong's and at least five of their children emigrated from Ireland to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada (According to Anna Armstrong obituary, The Gallipolis (Ohio) Tribune, March 7, 1894). In 1837 the Armstrong family came to the United States (E.E. Smith: A short Sketch of His Life,: The Wellston (Ohio) Telegram, May 1894). By the 1840 U.S. Census William Armstrong is shown on a farm in Raccoon Township, Gallia Co., Ohio that became Madison Township, Jackson County, Ohio (1850 Census).

The US 1850 Census from Madison County, Ohio shows the children of William and Sarah Armstrong to include Matthew (b. 1822), Anna (b. 15 Sept 1825), William (Jul 1829- 25 Jun 1885), Mary (b. 1832 in census but grave card says 10 May 1839) and Henry (1835). According to the census all were born in Ireland. William Armstrong's will mentions a son John that was executor of the will. Matthew Armstrong was not included in his fathers will suggesting he may have died before 1865.
