Merrimac, MA - A warm and gentle soul passed from our midst 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, June 28, 2005 as Barbara (Currier) Allen was called home to rejoin her husband Herman E. Allen, Sr. and her eldest child, Herman E. Allen, Jr., both of whom predeceased her by nearly ten years. She was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on April 26, 1917; the daughter of Arthur G. Currier and Helen (Stevens) Currier, and was part of the prominent Currier family lineage that goes back to 1616 in the area; was a 1934 graduate of Newburyport High School; and was married to her husband Herman on May 22, 1937. Barbara was an avid gardener, reader, and enjoyed doing cross word puzzles and playing cards and games with her family. She was also a very big Red Sox fan, watching every game they played, and was thrilled to have seen them win the World Series in 2004. She was also a very active member in the community for many years, as a member of the Merrimac Garden Club, as a very active member and past Deacon of the Pilgrim Congregational Church, and as a volunteer in the NEET program with her husband for about five years. As a member of the Rebekah Lodge United #13 in Newburyport for over 60 years, she held many positions including Past Noble Grand. She and her husband lived in Newburyport until 1969, when he was transferred by his employer, Hewlett Packard, to Sunnyvale, CA. In 1978 they retired to the San Diego, CA area before returning to live in Merrimac, MA in 1981, where she lived until her passing. In addition to being predeceased by her eldest child Herman E. Allen, Jr. and his wife Anita, she was survived by her daughter and her three other sons: Pattie (Fremont H.S., Sunnyvale, CA - Class of 1974) and her husband Larry Goodhue of Bedford, NH; David (Newburyport H.S. - Class of 1958) and his wife Barbara Allen of Haverhill, MA; James (Newburyport H.S. - Class of 1962) and his wife Denise Allen of Malibu, CA; and, Clifford (Newburyport H.S. - Class of 1964) and his wife Joanna Allen of Andover, England.
