Agnes was the daughter of John HOWAT aka HOWITT & Elizabeth CRAIG of Scotland. They were child immigrants to Canada.
Agnes and her sister Margaret were 'Bernardo Children' sent from Scotland to Canada to work for famillies in Canada. They were split up - each to an unknown location.
Barnardo began to send children to Canada as early as 1872 through Miss Annie Macpherson's organization. Barnardo visited Canada, meeting with government officials and others who were interested in the work. A home was donated in Toronto and the work was begun in earnest (the Toronto home was relocated several times). Another home was later acquired at Peterborough, Ontario, called Hazel Brae, used mainly for girls. This home would later be renamed the Margaret Cox home.
Which homes the Howitt sisters were initial sent to is uncertain. Later on, the sisters reunited and were able to be in each other's lives as adults. Each married a Canadian. Margaret married her widowed employer, following the death of his wife, whom Margaret had cared for; while Agnes married David Dafoe.

To my 3x great grandmother. You must've had a hard early life, being a Bernardo's Child and being relocated to a whole new country, far from your family and anyone you knew. May you rest in peace always. -
