Alaska resident Lois E. Dafoe, 84, died Nov. 21, 1997, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., of congestive heart failure. A memorial was at Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa. Her ashes were scattered near Willow.

Mrs. Dafoe was born July 5, 1913, in Oakley, Kan. She completed her higher education at Gooding College in Gooding, Idaho, where she received a teaching certificate. She moved to Alaska in 1951, settling first in Anchorage, where she lived for two years. Additional moves took her to Fairbanks, Juneau and Willow, before she finally returned to Anchorage in 1994. She spent her winters in Mesa. She was employed first as a teacher in Idaho from 1933 to 1938. In Alaska, she worked for the Department of Fish and Game out of Juneau for six years until 1959. She was a homemaker for most of her life. Her family said that she had a ''broad and varied history of community service,'' which included the vice presidency of the Anchorage Rotary Wives' Club and Anchorage Women's Club. She was named one of Anchorage's ''Ten Best Dressed'' in 1967 and was a recipient of the Fenwick Master Fisherman Award. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Willow and Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa. Her hobbies included oil and china painting, gardening, travel and entertaining. Mrs. Dafoe was ''an acknowledged hostess and community leader,'' said her family. ''Lois was beloved by her family and admired by a host of friends.''

She is survived by her husband, Don M. of Anchorage; daughters, Judy Hopkins of Anchorage; granddaughters, Blythe of Anchorage, and Darien Reece of Portland, Ore.; great grandchildren, Brian Campbell, Rianne Campbell, and Benton Campbell of Anchorage. The family requests that donations in her honor be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
