Amy was the third of 10 children born to civil servant/mechanical engineer William King and wife Hannah Powney.

About 1880 the family left Montreal and relocated to Ottawa where the 10th child was born.

In 1902 Amy became the first wife of journalist Samuel Wallace Dafoe. They had two children, Van and Eleanor, before sadly in 1912 the mother Amy passed away after suffering from cancer for over two years.

Three years later Samuel married Amy's sister Stella who raised the children, as well as one of their own, daughter Bonnie. The new family moved to British Columbia.
