Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley for Kenneth W. "Ken" Daniel, 53, of Imperial, who died of complications of diabetes Tuesday in his home.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the mortuary. Officers of Masonic lodges in Blythe and Brawley will officiate.

Burial will be at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in Riverside National Cemetery.

Mr. Daniel was born April 20, 1950, in Prineville, Ore., and was raised in the Redwood Valley, where he graduated from Ukiah High School in 1968.

Mr. Daniel worked at various jobs during his high school years, one as a mechanic, which he developed into a lifelong love of auto racing.

He joined the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. He served with the 101st Airborne as an aircraft turbine engine repairman.

After his discharge, he worked as a truck and auto mechanic, then began a career with the state of California. He worked for several years at Napa State Hospital, where he was superintendent of laundry services. He transferred to the state Department of Corrections and worked at various prisons in laundry services.

Mr. Daniel worked in Blythe at Chuckawalla State Prison from 1988-1991 and had worked at Calipatria State Prison since 1991.

He married Lella McNamara in San Luis Obispo on Nov. 8, 1985.

He was an avid fan of NASCAR and was the charter president of the Central Coast Treasure Hunters Association in San Luis Obispo, a metal-detecting club, in 1984. He was a member of Masonic lodges 390 in Imperial, 473 in Blythe and 402 in Brawley, where he served as master in 1997. He was a Scottish Rite mason, a York Rite mason, an Al Bahr Shriner, president of the Imperial Valley Shrine Club in 2000 and president of the Imperial Valley Scottish Rite Club in 1998.

Mr. Daniel was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Imperial Valley chapter 276; president of the Westmorland Lions Club in 2000; a member of American Legion in El Centro; the Veterans of Foreign Wars in El Centro; and the Northern California 101st Airborne Association.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Arliss Daniel, in 1995; and brothers Harry Daniel in 2001 and Arthur Daniel in 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Lella R. Daniel of Imperial; stepson and wife, Adam and Jeanne Orcutt of Hudson, Maine; stepdaughter and husband, Erin and Michael Giles of Bangor, Maine; father and stepmother, Jim and Nimfa Daniel of the Philippines; brother, Robert C. Daniel of Napa; grandmother, Juanita Dean of Needles; stepbrother, Toto Daniel of the Philippines; stepsister, Liza Daniel of the Philippines; and several uncles, nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Shriners Hospitals or the Westmorland Lions Club.
