Edna Davis Christopher, the adored daughter of Floyd Davis and Elnetia Smith Davis, was born on December 13, 1924, in Bay City, Texas. Her parents settled in Wharton, Texas, however, Edna spent many of her formative years both in Wharton and Bay City, where her beloved grandparents, Mike and Sally Smith, lived. She graduated from Hilliard High School in Bay City.

Edna’s quest for higher education took her to Austin, Texas, where she attended Samuel Huston College, now Huston-Tillotson University, where she received a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Home Economics, and graduated Cum Laude in 1945. From Austin, she went to New York City, where she attended Teachers College at Columbia University, and earned her Master of Arts in 1947, quite an amazing accomplishment for a young Black woman of 23.

Her long, illustrious teaching career was varied and diverse. After graduating from Columbia, she taught at the Harlem Boys Club, New York City; Southern University, Baton Rouge; Prairie View A & M University (summers); and Fort Valley State College, Fort. Valley, Georgia.

After a brief teaching assignment in Missouri, Edna relocated to San Antonio, in the mid-1950s and resided with her Uncle “Son” Pinkie and Aunt Geraldine “Jerry” Smith, with whom she worked in their restaurant, the Deluxe, on East Commerce Street.

Edna was married to William Nelson, Sr., and from that union her treasured sons, William Nelson, Jr., and Reginald Nelson, were born.

In 1957, she began her teaching career with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) as a Homemaking instructor at the old Phillis Wheatley High School. In 1967, she received her Counselor’s Certificate from Our Lady of the Lake, and was promptly promoted to a counselor at Phillis Wheatley. In 1970, she was transferred to Sam Houston High School, as a counselor. In 1976, she was transferred to Research and Development-Central Office. In 1977, Mrs. Christopher moved to Instructional Services-Central Office in connection with Experience-Based Career Education (EBCE), a federally-funded Career Education Pilot program with the Texas Education Agency. Starting as a counselor, she was later appointed director of EBCE.

In the last five years of her career, Mrs. Christopher moved to Guidance and Counseling-Navarro School in 1980, and in August 1981, she became the Counseling Dean and Assistant to the vice principal at Edison High School. To cap off her distinguished career, in 1983 she assumed the role of Counselor-Coordinator of the Diagnostic and Appraisal Center, SAISD, where she served until her retirement on June 14, 1985.

In addition to her stellar service with the SAISD, Edna was a Modified English instructor for low-achieving Airmen at Randolph Air Force Base; a counselor for the Neighborhood Youth Organization, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company; Y.O.P. counselor for the Summer Aid, Kelly Air Force Base: Drop-Out Program; and a counselor with the San Antonio Neighborhood Youth Organization (SANYO).

On Valentine’s Day, 1962, Edna married the love of her life, James A. “Litty” Christopher, the father of two young daughters, Teresa and Peggy. Edna and James were devoted to each other and their blended family. Edna, being an exceptional cook as well as a glittering, accomplished hostess, and her loving husband hosted countless close family get-togethers and exciting social gatherings at their beautiful home on Virginia Boulevard. They shared more than 14 wonderfully blessed years of marriage.

Mrs. Christopher held many professional affiliations including memberships in the South Texas Personnel and Guidance Assn., where she served as president, secretary, treasurer, and member of the Executive Board; S.A. District Counselors Assn.; Texas Personnel and Guidance Assn.; Texas Vocational Technical Assn.; San Antonio Administrators Assn.; Texas State Teachers Assn.; National Education Assn.; Edison High PTSA; Women Deans and Counselors Organization; and was a charter member of the University Round Table Organization. Mrs. Christopher was also a lifetime member of the N.A.A.C.P.

Following are just some of the numerous awards bestowed upon Mrs. Christopher: Outstanding Service Award, SANYO (1975); Marquis Who’s Who in the South & Southwest (1978-1979); Appreciation Award, E.B.C.E. (1979); Distinguished Service, SAISD (1985); Dedicated Service Award, SAISD (1985); Fifty-Year Member-Certificate of Merit, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (1994), and the Outstanding Service Award from the NAACP.

Mrs. Christopher enjoyed traveling after her retirement and lived an active social life. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Tau Omega Chapter, as well as a member and treasurer of Le Cercle d’Amies Social Club. An avid and consummate bridge player, she was a member of Messieurs et Mesdames Bridge Club, the Pace Setters, and the Friday Evening Bridge Club. She was a former member of the Minnie Stevens Piper Scholarship fund and served on the Advisory Board of the Eastside Development Council, and the Personnel Committee of Miller’s Child Development Center. A long-time member of Second Baptist Church, Edna was also a member of the Nannie Helen Burroughs Circle.

Mrs. Christopher was preceded in death by her husband, James, and her eldest son, William, Jr. She leaves, to cherish her memory, her son, Reginald; an aunt, Christine Smith; two grandchildren, William N. Perkins, III, and A’Yaisha Edwards, five great-children.
