Virginia Mae Dawes Broome, 84, of Galveston, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Born July 1, 1929 in Henrietta, Oklahoma to Thelma and Archie Dawes, Virginia moved to Galveston when she was in Junior High and met the love of her life, “Sonny!“ Virginia and Sonny met at the Tokyo Roller Rink in Galveston when she was 14 and Sonny was 15. Roller skating was a big part of their dating life. They loved going to midnight movies at the State Theater as well as Saturday nights on the Pleasure Pier. They danced to the likes of Guy Lombardi and Mel Torme. Virginia graduated from Ball High School in 1946, and she and Sonny were married on July 19, 1947. They were married for over 66 years.
Virginia worked at various businesses in Galveston. One of her most rewarding accomplishments was serving as Director of the Galveston Tourist and Convention Bureau. She later worked as a Sales Manager for The Galvez and Holiday Inn. With all that she did, nothing was more important than her family.
After raising three daughters on the Island, Virginia and Sonny found a passion for travel. They traveled the world by planes, trains and motor homes. However, there was no place like “home” and Virginia’s love for the Island.
Virginia is survived by her husband, H.C. (Sonny) Broome; three daughters: Caren Broome Nelson and husband Olof, Paula Broome Rupert, and Brenda Broome West and husband Bud; seven grandchildren: Ashley Hart and husband Marcus Moliteus, Christopher Rupert and wife Sarah, Jeff Rupert and wife Cara, Jason Rupert and wife Brittney, Mandy Rupert, Sam West and Clay West; six great grandchildren: Dylan, Christian, Braden, Karli, Brooke and Luke Rupert; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Virginia’s family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:30 pm, Friday, May 16th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, May 17th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Pinard officiating. Entombment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shrines Children’s Burn Hospital, 815 Market Street, Galveston, TX 77550.
