Civil War Veteran, Former Selectman, Relative of General, Dies.
Cummington, Dec. 23 (1924) - Charles Woodbury Dawes, 85 years old, a lifelong resident of Cummington died Thursday. The greater part of his life was spent on the farm where he was born, the estate having been in the Dawes family since the settlement of the town. As a young man he worked in Easthampton and Cheshire, Conn., enlisting from Easthampton in Co. K, 52d regiment, serving for nine months under Gen. Banks at Baton Rouge, La., during the Civil War.
He married Lucretia Bates, daughter of Philander Bates of Cummington' Sept. 24, 1867. She died three years ago. To them was born three children, Hattie S., now Mrs. Clifford M. Thayer, of Cummington: Jacob V. who died some years ago in Cleveland O., and Ernest B. who has resided at home.
Mr. Dawes was active in the community and the church. He was for many years a selectman, and a member of various town boards. He was a deacon in the Congregational Church for many years, also church treasurer, and faithful attendant of the service until the last month when his physical disabiliteis compelled him to remain at home. He was son of Veren and Florintha Whitmarsh Dawes, Veren being the son of Daniel Dawes, a distant relative of Vice-President Charles G. Dawes. He is survived by a half brother, Rev.N. (Newton) W. Bates of Sullivan O., two children, five grandchildren, Leon D. Thayer, Charles J. Thayer and Stanlee B. Thayer of Cummington, Byron F. Dawes of Brussells, Belgium, and Mrs. James Chillman Jr., of Houston, Tex., and two great grandchildren in Belgium.
Funeral services were held at the family residence on Saturday at 2 o'clock. Rev. A.V. McCracken officiating. Burial was in the cemetary near the ancestral home.
