US Congressman, US Senator. After graduating from Yale College in 1839, he became a teacher and edited the Greenfield Gazette and the North Adams Transcript. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1842 and commenced to practice law in North Adams, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, a member a of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1850, a member of the State constitutional convention in 1853 and district attorney for the western district of Massachusetts. In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress and to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving until 1875. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1875-93). He then was chairman of the commission created to administer the tribal affairs of the Five Civilized Tribes of Indians in the Indian Territory, serving 1893, until his death at age 86.
