Albert R DeFehr enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on 16 Oct 1940. He became a Major and the commanding officer of the 314th Fighter Squadron, 324th Fighter Group. He was killed during the Battle of Monte Cassino while piloting a bomber that was shot down.

His body was never recovered. His cenotaph is located on the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Rome, Italy.

Major DeFehr was a recipient of the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Order of the Purple Heart.
