Anthony de Mello, S.J., was a Catholic priest of the Jesuit Order, an author and speaker, known around the world for his teaching of Christian spirituality enriched by the Buddhist and Hindu spirituality of his native India. Educated by the Jesuits of St. Peter's School in Bandra, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1947. He studied theology at De Nobili College from 1958 to 1962. He earned a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Loyola University, Chicago, in 1964, and served as the rector of the Jesuit Seminary in Mumbai from 1968 to 1972. His classic work on meditation and spirituality, "Sadhana: A Way to God", was published in 1978 and was followed by numerous publications including "Awareness" and "Walking on Water". Father Tony became a much sought-after speaker, known for his gentle and engaging style with frequent humorous and thought-provoking anecdotes. He was also the director of the Sadhana Institute of Pastoral Counseling in Poona, India. Portions of his later published work were scrutinized by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which issued a warning in 1998, but his books and recorded talks remain popular many years after his untimely death in 1987 at the age of 56. A beloved pioneer of interspirituality, he died unexpectedly from a heart attack at Fordham University in New York, where he had gone to participate in a seminar on spirituality, and was buried at St. Peter's Church in Mumbai, India.
