Tony DeCastro, age 62, of Wellston, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2011, at his home. He was born November 2, 1948, in Newark, New Jersey, the son of the late Bert DeCastro and Rose Cavalla DeCastro. Tony was a graduate of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. He received his bachelor's degree from Rio Grande College and his Master of Education degree from Xavier University. Tony was a physical education teacher for the Wellston City School system, retiring after 35 years of teaching. He was a former tennis coach for W.H.S. having taken the tennis team to the State championship level under his leadership. Tony also coached jr. high basketball at Coalton and junior varsity baseball and cross country at W.H.S. He was co-director of the SAFE after school program for Wellston, a former employee of the Gem Bottling Co., Inc. in Wellston and former activities director for the Y.M.C.A. in Jackson. He had been an active member of the W.T.A. A true sports enthusiast, he enjoyed watching local sports, the Yankees, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the U.K. Wildcats. He attended Hope United Methodist Church in Wellston.

Tony is survived by his wife, Maria Montgomery DeCastro, whom he married on June 19, 1971; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark David and Amanda DeCastro of Hilliard and Matthew Daniel and Amanda DeCastro of Columbus; sister, Carolyn DeCastro of Whippany, New Jersey; brothers-in-law, Mark Montgomery and Sam Cooper (Bev); sisters-in-law, Linda "Katie" Stokes (Tom), Denise Beery (Mike) and Nancy Newsom (Karl), as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Tony was preceded in death by his cousin and close friend, Sam DiPiazza.

Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Rev. Glen Herman officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be given to the Tony DeCastro Memorial Scholarship, c/o The Milton Banking Co., 123 South Ohio Avenue, Wellston, Ohio 45692 or 400 East Main Street, Jackson, Ohio 45640.
