Jacqueline Kay (Deeds) Alberhasky, 63, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011 from complications associated with ALS. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Friday, July 15, 2011 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-8 pm at Lensing Funeral Home. Following the committal, the family will welcome friends to a luncheon at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City (building immediately west of Lensing Funeral Home). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Faith Baptist Church of Iowa City.
Jackie was born to Mervin Eugene Deeds Sr. and Marilyn Jean (Hickman) Deeds, Aug. 2, 1947, in Waterloo, IA. She attended West High School and worked towards an Accounting degree at UNI in Cedar Falls and a Nursing degree at Allen College in Waterloo.
Jackie was stricken with polio and polymyositis during her younger years. She also faced numerous difficulties, side effects and surgeries related to these diseases. Through it all she never lost her sweet personality or her hope and faith. She would joke that she was God's little experiment for how many illnesses a body could take. Jackie had a smile that could light up a room and kept that smile right to the end. She enjoyed being with people and was quick to look for the good in others and to overlook faults.
She battled through the effects of her diseases to become a successful manager and tour director for hotels in Minneapolis, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Iowa City. It was at the Heartland Inn in I.C. where she was introduced to Gary by one of her employees, who happened to be his sister. They were married Feb. 1, 1992. Jackie retired from her job as a teller at the University of Iowa Credit Union in 2004 to take care of her ailing mother.
Jackie enjoyed working with crafts, plants, collecting Victorian knick-knacks and Avon. She enjoyed reading about Biblical prophecy, US history, and researching family genealogies. Her greatest love was her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with them, teaching them, and spoiling them when she could.
Jackie was a long time member of Hagerman Baptist Church in Waterloo and attended Faith Baptist Church in Iowa City. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age and it was important to her that her children and grandchildren understand their need to make this same decision.
Jackie is survived by her husband: Gary Alberhasky of Iowa City, her four children, Carmen (Keith) Wipf of Evansdale, John (Denise) Alberhasky of DesMoines, David (Donna) Alberhasky of Iowa City, and Cindy Parks Alberhasky of Iowa City, a brother Mervin (Tracey) Deeds Jr. of Ridgely, Tennessee, and a sister-in-law, Eldene Deeds of Waterloo. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Taylor Vansickle of Crystal, MN, DeVante Lang, ShaLynn Parks, Alina Alberhasky, and Ethan Alberhasky all of Iowa City.
Jackie was preceded in death by her father, mother, and a brother Danny Deeds.
The family wishes to thank all friends and family members for their love, prayers, and support during this difficult journey. Our gratitude is also extended with a heart of love and unending thanks for the amazing people at Iowa City Hospice, Mercy 5 North, and our wonderful church family at Faith Baptist.
To God be the Glory. We thank Him for our wonderful Savior Jesus Christ, the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and for ushering our sweet Jackie to be forever home with Him.
