Title: Gerald Desmond, City Attorney, dies of cancer.
ABSTRACT: The 48-year-old city attorney died today of cancer at Memorial Hospital. He served on the city council beginning in 1954 and was reelected in 1957. In 1960 he won the city attorney race by a 2-1 margin. He attended Long Beach City College, University of California at Berkeley, he worked his way through Harvard Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1941. He worked with the U.S. Justice department and during WWII he served in the Navy. After the war he entered a law practice with his brother Walter until he was elected Long Beach City Attorney. He was active in securing the harbor tidelands for the city and succeeded in prohibiting oil drilling on the city's beaches. Survivors include his wife Virginia Slater; 5 children: Mrs. Margaret Bomberg of Petaluma; daughters Eileen, Kathleen, Patricia; son Gerald. Also survived by brothers Walter Desmond and Wayne Hanson, sisters Mary McGinnis, Constance bond, Eleanor Maloney, Olive Desmond and Edith Daley. The family resides at 2311 E. 1st St.
