She was regarded as married to Augustus Newnham Dickens, a younger brother of the English author Charles Dickens. Augustus Dickens left his first wife Harriet in England and moved to America with Bertha Phillips, so it is unknown if they were ever legally married. They had three children, Bertram, Adrian, and Amy Bertha Dickens, who appear to have lived to adulthood. The two-sided gravestone at her and Augustus' graves also lists "Their Infants, Lincoln, Violet, Ophelia, Died 1865". These three infants were triplets who probably died at or soon after birth, and are in addition to the three children who grew to adulthood.
Bertha died of an overdose of morphine or laudanum, two years after Augustus Dickens' death.
