Eleanor Diem Bergen died peacefully at home on July 18, 2012 from debilitation and decline at the age of 87. She was a resident of Auburn for the past three years.
Eleanor was born in Rochester, New York, on January 16, 1925, to George and Ruth Diem, as one of five children. After graduating from New York City's Pratt Institute, she worked as an illustrator for fine magazines of the day, including the Ladies Home Journal and Cosmopolitan, providing the covers of many editions.
At the close of World War II, Eleanor modeled on a Victory Day parade float, going through Times Square. She married a decorated soldier, William Bergen, with whom she had two children, William and Patricia .
Trained as a professional singer, she sang at nightclubs and was booked at the famous Copacabana and later was invited to join Bob Hope on one of his USO tours.
Eleanor and her family moved in 1962 to California. There, she raised her children. In the mid 1980s, she moved to Oklahoma to be near her daughter Patricia and grandchildren Nycole and Wesley. In 2009, she moved to Auburn, California to be cared for by her son William, his wife Lorna and grandchildren Patrick, Diana and Athena .
Eleanor imparted a spirit of optimism and possibility to those who loved her. She continued to paint throughout her life and encouraged artistic expression in her children and grandchildren. Eleanor's appreciation for their talents inspired them in their pursuits.
Eleanor Diem Bergen was the fourth of five children, Dorothy, Virginia, Ruth and George. Her survivors are: in New York, sister Ruth Near, nieces, Barbara and Pamela Mestler, sister-in-law, Joan Diem; in Oklahoma, daughter Patricia Ruth Whitehurst, son-in-law Richard, granddaughter Nycole Blakley and her husband Waco, and great-grandchildren Austin and Meghan; in Texas, grandson Wesley Mandel; in California, son William A. Bergen and daughter-in-law Lorna, grandchildren Athena, Diana and Patrick, and the children of the late nephew Gerald Protz, Geoffrey and Jennifer.
Private services were held at New Auburn Cemetery through Sierra Foothills Funeral Services.
